An assistant lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology here at the University of Cape Coast, Miss Linda Otoo has advocated for emphasis to be placed on acknowledging the efforts of those who have made it possible for people to access internet in Ghana and in the world at large.
Her call came as Ghana and other countries across the globe commemorated World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2022.
The day celebrated on May 17 annually since 1969, is to increase awareness of the possibilities that the usage of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies.
It also offers Ghana and the rest of the world the opportunity to increase knowledge of ways to bridge the digital divide.

Speaking to ATL FM NEWS, she noted that the day is a great day to be celebrated and must be dedicated to those who ensured that ICT gains grounds in the country.
This year’s commemoration has the theme, “Digital technologies for Older Persons and Healthy Ageing.” The theme raises awareness of the important role of telecommunications or ICTs in supporting people to stay healthy, connected and independent – physically, emotionally and financially.
Touching on how digital technologies helps in healthy ageing, Miss Linda Otoo indicated that with the advent of smart phones which is a product of digital technology, the individual is offered the opportunity to through the use of the internet access various applications that can assist the individual to age healthily.
“With the advent of smart phones and other digital devices hooked onto the internet we can get simple assistance from the internet that can also enhance the individual ageing healthily. There are several applications even at the app store or play store that can assist the individual.”
On his part the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Houlin Zhao called all to take active part in this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebration and make recommendations as to how the senior citizens in our society can be helped to become valuable contributors to the digital world.
He notes that “2022 represents an unprecedented opportunity to break cycles of exclusion and accelerate digital transformation for all.”
