Ghana joined the United Nations and countries belonging to the African Union on Thursday to celebrate the International Public Service Day commemorated annually on June 23.
The day was commemorated by the Public Service Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Ministry of information, and the heads of all public service institutions.
It was held under the sub-theme; Enhancing the resilience of the African public administration to support and facilitate the realization of Africa’s nutritional needs during and post covid-19 pandemic.
At a media durbar to celebrate the day in Ghana, the Director-General of Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said the service in a bid to reduce the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases coupled with the Covid 19 pandemic has launched the Ghana wellness initiative which seeks to roll out preventive and promotive services.
These services he explained seek to address the increasing trend of overweight and other non-communicable diseases.
He emphasized saying “I believe that this provides an opportunity since the wellness initiative implementation has a broad scope that goes beyond what the curative health system can do and engage the bigger health sector players and other sectors such as agriculture and regulatory services and the industry.”
The Public Service Day
The UN Public Service Day seeks to appreciate individuals who dedicate their lives to building an equal, kind and progressive community and are also the backbone of a functioning democratic society.
The decision to mark the June 23 United Nations Public Service Day was designated by the United Nations in 2002 with a resolution passed on December 20, 2002.
The Day’s importance was highly recognized during the 2020 Covid 19 pandemic as public service workers risked their lives to save millions of lives and ensured the continuous and safe existence of mankind.
