The University of Cape Coast has held its maiden matriculation ceremony to admit the first batch of students into the Post-Graduate Diploma in Security Studies at the Ghana Police Academy in Accra.
The Ghana Police Service earlier this year signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Cape Coast to run a Post- Graduate Diploma Certificate in Security Studies to encourage police officers to upgrade their knowledge in security issues; enhance performance and improve service delivery.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast,Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh stated that the matriculation marks a very significant and symbolic moment in the history of both the University of Cape Coast and the Ghana Police Service adding that UCC will not renege on its responsibilities to equip officers of the service, quality academic training to raise their professional competence in the discharge of their duties to meet international standards.

She also said “UCC is committed to joining hands with the Ghana Police Service to enhance the training of personnel of the service to meet the security, crime and terrorism related challenges in Ghana and beyond. In doing this, we shall provide quality training to attain the Ghana Police Service vision of becoming a world class police service capable of delivering a planned democratic protective and peaceful service up to the standard of international best practice.”
On his part, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh intimated the service’s continuous support for the programme to ensure its fruition.
“The police administration will continue to support the academy to ensure the successful completion of not only discourse but all subsequent ones. It is important to state that successful graduate of this face of the training will be awarded a post graduate diploma in security studies. It is my expectation that this outstanding novelty within our training architecture which seeks to enhance the managerially and leadership skills of cadet officers who will be sustained for the service to reap its benefit,” he noted.
He charged the newly admitted students to leverage on the opportunity given them to build their capacities in order to offer quality service to the country.
“After your training, the people of Ghana will expect you to bring your leadership by managerial expertise to bear on your policing duties who will expect you to do things differently and think outside the box. You need to take the course seriously in order to be adequately prepared for the demanding responsibility ahead,” he charged them.
He also called on the general public to adhere to the hygienic and safety protocols prescribed by the country’s health professionals in order to prevent the spread of the virus and protect precious lives although vaccines have been introduced to help in the fight against the covid 19 pandemic.
