The new Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has praised Speaker Alban Bagbin for officially declaring four parliamentary seats vacant.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Dr. Forson expressed his approval of the Speaker’s decision, calling it a step in the right direction for the nation.
In delivering his ruling, Speaker Bagbin referenced Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution, clarifying that its application was not restricted to future parliaments.
He explained that had it been meant only for future sessions, the article wouldn’t have been necessary as the MPs in question would have already completed their term.
Mr.Bagbin also emphasized that the previous decision to expel the Fomena MP, made by former Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye, did not bind him or any future Speaker.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused Speaker Alban Bagbin of deliberately avoiding the service of a legal suit.
The suit was filed in response to the Speaker’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
Afenyo-Markin expressed his belief that the Speaker conspired with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to push forward this ruling, which he called unconstitutional.
