The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), in collaboration with the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), has suspended its indefinite nationwide strike following what the unions have described as a positive response from government.
The announcement to call off the industrial action, which was declared on Wednesday, May 21, was made on Thursday, May 22, 2025, after the Ministry of Finance issued a letter authorizing the implementation of a long-awaited negotiated agreement effective November 1, 2024.
Confirming the development, SSA-UoG National Chairman George Ansong explained that the unions were satisfied with the government’s latest move.
He indicated that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) had also issued the necessary clearance for universities to begin payment processing immediately.
“The reason is very simple, we declared an indefinite strike, and around this time yesterday, I received a call from the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission that he has sent me a message. When I checked, it was a letter from the Ministry of Finance directing the implementation of the signed agreement with government.”
He added that a follow-up letter from GTEC was also required before universities could act, revealing “The Deputy Minister of Education also stepped in, and we were promised that the letter from GTEC would arrive this morning and thankfully, it did.”
Mr. Ansong said after consultations with sister unions and members, the leadership agreed to suspend the strike and resume work.
“We are satisfied with what the government has done, and for that matter, we have resumed work,” he confirmed.
