Open defecation and improper disposal of refuse around beaches are two common practices in coastal communities.
Ayisah, a fishing community in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abbrem (KEEA) Municipal Assembly is currently battling with this menace. Parts of the sea defense built to protect the community from raging tidal waves have been turned into refuse dumps and places of convenience.
When ATLFM NEWS visited the community, some residents explained that the littering of the beach might be because of the lack of waste bins in the community.
Others told the news team they have resorted to open defecation along the beach especially on the sea defense because of the deplorable state of the public toilet in the community.
According to them, the public toilet which was built years ago needs renovation and thus called on the Municipal Assembly to intervene since this can help curb the menace of open defecation.
Meanwhile, residents who are against these practices called on authorities to immediately roll out measures to deter the culprits from these acts citing the health implications the menace have on the community as the main reason why an action must be taken against those who indulge in both practices.
On his part, the Omanhen Okyeame of Edina Traditional Area, Safohene Kwame Anakwah indicated that an announcement will be made to warn residents against these illegal practices.
He added that after series of warnings, the traditional council will ensure that residents who persist in the acts are arrested and prosecuted.
He, however, called on the KEEA Municipal Assembly to supply waste bins to the community to curb the littering of the beach.
