Over the weekend, some of Ghana’s curent elite musicians, Sarkodie and Shatta Wale won awards at the just ended International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA).
Sarkodie won his accolade and stamped his authority as one of Ghana and Africa’s best performers with his “Black Love” virtual concert ahead of some of the biggest music festivals and programs in Jamaica such as Beenie Man vs Bounty Battle, Rebel Salute, and the popular Caribbean and reggae music festival, Reggae Sunfest.
Obviously, this award has confirmed that indeed Sarkodie is a music genius and his “Black Love” virtual music concert is one of the best and well-organized music shows in that particular calendar year.
Sarkodie was not the only one who won awards on the night, because his compatriot in the reggae dancehall category beat fierce competition from well-noted Jamaican dancehall artistes and won the best entertainer of the year at the IRAWMA Awards.
However, representing the younger female generation, young Erica Tandoh, popularly known as DJ Switch also won the much-coveted best young entertainer of the year, adding to her avalanche of international awards and presence in the entertainment scene.
Instrumentalist Kwame Yeboah on the night won the best “instrumentalist of the year”.
This was the 39th edition of the International Reggae and World Music Awards.
Some sensational scenes at the awards night was the induction of Reggae music legend Ziggy Marley into the International Reggae and World Music Awards Hall of Fame as well as being the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Canadian rapper Drake and Jamaican recording artiste Popcaan won the ‘Best R&B/Hip Hop & Reggae Collaboration of the Year’ award.
The biggest winner of the night was Reggae legend Buju Banton, who won more than three awards including the ‘Hon. Bob Marley Award for Entertainer of the Year’.
Africa was duly represented at the event as South African artistes such as Master KG, and Nomcebo Zikode were among the award winners.
