Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has stated that one of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo‘s greatest accomplishments during his first term was the passage of the Right to Information (RTI) bill.
In a tweet, Mr Braimah said “One wonderful legacy of the Akufo-Addo government is the passage of the RTI
“The politically driven closure of pro-opposition radio stations around the country is one of the bad legacies of the Akufo-Addo government.”
He added “Closing pro-opposition radio stations across the country and leaving pro-government stations is anti-media freedom and very undemocratic.”
The National Communications Authority (NCA) shut down 57 of the 144 Frequency Modulation (FM) stations that were cited for various infractions during an audit.
“In compliance with the Electronic Communication Tribunal’s (ECT) rulings, 30 of the 57 stations have submitted new applications for FM authorisations, 15 of which have been processed.
“The applications for the remaining 15 FM stations are still being processed, and the results will be reported to them once they have completed all of the necessary procedures, which include technical review, management review, and board approval,” she added.
Ursula Owusu, the Communications Minister, went on to say that 27 of the stations that were shut down had not applied for new FM licenses.
On Monday, October 14, she gave the updates during her turn at the ‘meet-the-press’ series in Accra.
