The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is gearing up for the rollout of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM), a new initiative aimed at improving the distribution of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across the country.
To ensure the smooth implementation of the programme, the NPA has held a sensitization meeting at the Centre for National Culture in Cape Coast that brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, including the Ghana National Fire Service, the Police Service, Ghana Standards Authority, LPG operators, oil marketing companies, traders, driver unions, and members of the media.
The event aimed at engaging participants on the upcoming Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) in the central region and addressing concerns to ensure the initiative’s successful implementation.
Speaking to the media at the sidelines of the meeting, Johnson Gbagbo Junior, a Supervisor from the Gas Directorate of the NPA provided further insights into the CRM, highlighting key features aimed at ensuring easy access for all consumers.
He said under the CRM, consumers will no longer need to refill their LPG cylinders themselves instead, they will exchange empty cylinders for filled ones at designated points.
Johnson Gbagbo Junior says this is also to safeguard the health of all.
“There is a global call for climate change and burning charcoal, burning firewood, smoke inhalation, leads to health and respiratory issues,” he said.
“Most of our mothers who use charcoal, who stay by charcoal and firewood for very long hours complain about irritating eyes, smoke inhalation affects their sleeping patterns. And so, we want LPG to be accessible to Ghanaians.”
He emphasized that the Bottling plants will be solely responsible for cylinder maintenance, ensuring they are safe and fit for use adding the CRM will ensure a consistent supply of LPG with bottling plants filling thousands of cylinders daily.
In addition, he said it is cost-effective as customers will no longer be responsible for cylinder maintenance costs.
Mr. Michael Opoku Obiri, Central Regional manager for NPA, explained that the CRM is part of a holistic strategy to increase the number of households in Ghana using LPG.
He emphasized that the new model would be more efficient and cost-effective for consumers adding that the NPA will ensure that customers are not short-changed
