Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah has been eulogized for his immense contribution to national development through the prioritization of education.
Ghana marks Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day on September 21 annually to remember Kwame Nkrumah, the founder of modern-day Ghana.
The day also marks Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday.
Professor Kwame Acheampong who is with the International Conference on Education Research for Development in Africa (ICERDA) indicated that with Ghana’s history since Independence, Dr Kwame Nkrumah contributed massively to promote the development of education in the country.
“Nkrumah equated national development to education development and the way he did that was to put education at the centre of national development in Ghana,” he said.
Further extolling Kwame Nkrumah for his achievements, he indicated that the emphasis Nkrumah put on teaching is what encouraged him to establish the University of Cape Coast as a teaching University.
Prof. Acheampong made these remarks in commemoration of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day at the 3rd International Conference on Education Research for Development in Africa (ICERDA) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
He explained that Nkrumah’s goal was to ensure that teachers filled the schools which were being built and he was committed doing to that.
Prof. Acheampong also noted that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah established the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) because of the emphasis he put on science education.
“His vision was that our development has to be driven by science,” he continued.
He therefore said it is important for the country to remember the contribution that Nkrumah made to education emphasizing that “we cannot talk about our development without education.”
To Prof Kwame Acheampong the bedrock of any country’s development is education.
Meanwhile, he says “It seems to me that we have lost our way somehow not only in Ghana but in many other African countries.
According to him, it is right at this point for us to remember and place emphasis on education.
“We in Ghana talk about Sankofa. Let’s go back and carry the vision that Nkrumah had for education, for our development cannot happen without education,” he stressed.
