Burna Boy and Wizkid, both Nigerian Afrobeats artists, have received Grammy Awards in 2021.
Burna Boy took home the award for Best Global Music Song, while Wizkid took home the award for Best Music Video for his collaboration with Beyoncé, Brown Skin Girl, from the Lion King: The Gift album.
Blue Ivy, Beyoncé’s daughter, was also a winner on the track.
The artist, video director, and video producer are all honored with the Best Music Video award.
Burna Kid, real name Damini Ogulu, was nominated for the second year in a row and won with his album Twice As Big.
Los Angeles is hosting the 63rd Grammy Awards. This year’s ceremony is different because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has been called “music’s biggest night.”
There is no audience, and the performers have been divided into five stages within the Los Angeles Convention Center, which are organized in a circle to preserve social distance.
Burna Boy, 29, beat out four other artists, including Tinariwen, a Malian band.

Twice As Tall was described as “a masterclass in the vibe and hustle that have made Burna Boy an international musical force” in the Grammy nomination.
“[He] continues to break down barriers, effortlessly mixing styles and genres and fearlessly fueling the fire that is boiling the melting pot of pop, Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae, and more,” the statement said.
Stormzy, Youssou Ndour, Naughty By Nature, and Chris Martin of Coldplay are among the international artists featured on the record, which was executive produced by Sean Combs.
Wizkid’s video was dubbed “a feast for the fashion-forward and a celebration of Black and brown female beauty everywhere” after he won.
Burna Boy was nominated for the same award in 2019 (then known as Best World Music Album), but lost to Angelique Kidjo at the 2020 ceremony.
Kidjo, on the other hand, dedicated her victory to him, saying, “Burna Boy is among those young African artists who are changing the way our continent is viewed and the way that African music is the backbone of all music.”
Burna Child, who was born in Nigeria’s Port Harcourt, released his first album, LIFE (which stands for “Leaving an Impact For Eternity”), in 2013.
Following that, Redemption was released in 2015, followed by Outside in 2018, which featured the international hit song Ye.
Burna Boy’s 2019 African Giant album, however, catapulted him onto the international stage and gained him his first Grammy nomination.
Burna has become increasingly outspoken about social issues in Africa, often compared to Nigerian superstar Fela Ransome-Kuti, whose songs he has sampled liberally.
