The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Operations Manager for Central Region, Samuel Deku-Otoo has intimated that the NHIS has been a cornerstone of Ghana’s healthcare system.
To him, the NHIS is making quality healthcare accessible to all country residents.
Speaking to ATLFM NEWS ahead of preparations towards the commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of NHIS, he said that NHIS as a social intervention program has been instrumental in increasing affordability and accessibility to healthcare services, especially among the most vulnerable and marginalized in society.
He added that since its inception, the NHIS has witnessed a remarkable shift in the healthcare-seeking behaviour of the population.
Mr. Deku-Otoo emphasized that the 20th-anniversary celebration promises to be a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewed dedication to the cause of accessible and quality healthcare for all residents in Ghana.
“We use the occasion to project how far we’ve come, project our policies, our benefits package and everything NHIS. This year’s one being our 20th-anniversary celebration, I think the authority or head office is planning how it will go. But I can tell you that it will be a mega one” he said.
On his part, the Central Regional PRO for NHIS, Augustine Owusu Frempong said NHIS has introduced its latest innovation – the” My NHIS App” aimed at enhancing convenience and accessibility.
He explains that the app makes it possible for individuals with smartphones to obtain NHIS cards and numbers without merely having to walk to the NHIS office as done in the past.
One however needs a Ghana Card to go through the process after downloading the App from the App Store or Google Play Store.
Completing the online process and obtaining the digital NHIS card and number as such, makes it possible for the bearer to use the card at the hospital.
