The Central Regional branch of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council has sworn into office, Nana Akyer VII as a new Chief Fisherman of Cape Coast.
His enstoolment as the new Cape Coast chief fisherman follows the demise of the former chief fisherman, Nana Akyer VI.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at Anomabo in the Central Region, the chief fisherman for Gomoa Fetteh and the Chairman of the Central Regional branch of Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, Nana Obrenu Dabum, said the government’s effort to curb illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities on Ghana’s seas has so far yielded no results.
He said this has reduced the daily catch, and as such, Nana Akyer VII, as the new chief fisherman of Cape Coast, the entire fishermen in the region, and all relevant stakeholders should help mitigate IUU activities.
In an attempt to end such practices, Nana Obrenu Dabum said he is working hard to educate the fishermen on the effects of IUU on the fishing industry and the economy.

On his part, Nana Akyer VII expressed excitement at the honour bestowed on him as the newly enstooled chief fisherman of Cape Coast, emphasizing that he will do everything possible to help promote the fishing industry.
He, however, urged the government to intensify the supply of both premix fuel and outboard motors to the fishermen to enhance their work.
He also appealed to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development to devise technological methods to detect fish caught using harmful chemicals as a means to punish fishermen who engage in IUU.
He maintained that all fishermen must support the fight against IUU on the seas.
