The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has given the government two weeks to reinstate the wages of teachers whose names were removed from the payroll.
According to the union, over the past fifteen months, the names of certain teachers have been removed from the payroll.
Angel Carbonou, President of the NAGRAT, said during a press conference in Accra on Thursday, February 17, that they are also demanding fast payment of capitation grant to basic schools.
The union also opposed the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) intention to designate headteachers for Schools.
Angel Carbonou, President of NAGRAT, said that the Ministry does not have the authority to designate headmasters for the different schools.
He said that such appointments are the responsibility of the Ghana Education Service (GES), not the Ministry.
He said “There are a lot of issues in the educational sector that must be addressed but we are all pretending as though there are no issues.
“One of the them is the decision by the Ministry of Education to appoint headmasters and headmistresses and they are starting with STEM schools but he Ministry has no power to appoint headmasters or headmistress.”
He added “It is the function of the Ghana Education Service (GES), the GES has that power to appoint headmasters and headmistresses, not the Ministry of Education.”
He also demanded that the Ministry of Education retract the advertisement inviting candidates to apply for the job of headmaster or headmistress.
“So the advertisement brought by the Ministry inviting applicants to apply to be headmasters and headmistress in STEM schools should be withdrawer by the Ministry immediately,” Mr Carbonou said.
