The Minority in Parliament has boycotted the vetting process for Mr. Krapah’s appointment as Minister of State at the Energy, citing concerns over public exclusion and government expansion.
This follows President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Herbert Krapah, currently a deputy minister at the Energy Ministry, citing the heavy workload at the ministry as the reason for this nomination.
During the Appointments Committee sitting, Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah outlined the reasons for the boycott stating “Consistent with our earlier position, the caucus will not participate in the vetting of any ministerial nominee that adds to the already bloated size of this Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government”.
He pointed out that the nomination was not published in a national newspaper, thereby denying the public the opportunity to submit memoranda or make representations to the Appointments Committee.
Mr. Buah also questioned the necessity of appointing a Minister of State at the Energy Ministry when a substantive minister is already in place.
The Minority believes that the vetting process is designed to exclude public participation and to further increase the government’s already large size.
“The Minority Council has noted attempts by the majority side to bypass the due process required for the President’s nominee for the position of Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy,” he stated.
“Long-standing parliamentary practice requires that nominations by the President be published in a newspaper of national circulation to inform the public and request memoranda or representation. This has not been done, breaching the usual procedures.”
