The Managing Director of ARB Apex Bank, Alex Awuah, has emphasized the need for a dedicated development bank to finance long-term, development-oriented activities, with a particular focus on supporting women in business.
Speaking on the importance of targeted financial interventions, Mr. Awuah highlighted that traditional banks often shy away from financing long-term projects, making the establishment of a development bank critical.
He noted that such an institution could prioritize financing women’s businesses and creating opportunities for economic growth.
“Look at Ghana’s population; our women population is very big. If the government prioritizes setting up a development bank to support women and give them credit for the little things they do, I believe we can make significant progress,” he stated.
Mr. Awuah stressed that financial support should be intentional and aimed at value creation noting “We should ensure that when we’re giving support, we do it with the intention of creating wealth. It shouldn’t just be about giving money that yields no tangible results. The goal is to make these businesses sustainable so they can create value for themselves, their families, and the economy at large,” he added.
He urged stakeholders to adopt a strategic approach to ensure that financial interventions empower women to build sustainable businesses, thereby contributing to economic growth, concluding “Together, we can grow the economy.”
