John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated his commitment to reforming the teachers’ licensure process if elected president on December 7.
During the NDC manifesto launch in Winneba, he announced that his administration would cancel the current licensure exams and integrate the licensing process into the final year examinations for teacher trainees.
“We believe that the current licensure exams are an unnecessary burden on our teachers, by incorporating the licensing into their final exams, we streamline the process and remove this additional hurdle.” Mr. Mahama stated.
Additionally, Mr. Mahama introduced a significant initiative aimed at improving teachers’ living conditions, explaining that this project would ensure that all new school projects include accommodation facilities for teachers.
“Teachers deserve to live comfortably within the communities they serve,” he said, emphasizing that the initiative is designed to make that a reality.” he stated
He also promised a 20 percent basic salary allowance for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural and underserved communities, highlighting the NDC’s commitment to incentivizing service in challenging areas. “
We must ensure that our teachers and health workers are motivated to serve in every corner of the country,” he declared.
Furthermore, Mr. Mahama outlined plans to expand infrastructure to facilitate the prompt employment of nurses, health workers, and teachers, proposing a scheme to assist teachers in acquiring vehicles by offering flexible payment arrangements and employer guarantees in partnership with teacher unions and the banking sector.
“We want to support our teachers in every possible way, and this includes helping them own the vehicles they need,” he explained.
