Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has committed to enhancing the fishing industry if elected as the country’s leader on 7th January 2024.
Mr. Mahama highlighted the NDC’s previous establishment of the landing beach committee and judicious distribution of premix as evidence of the party’s focus on the sector.
He lamented the current state of fuel diversion and mismanagement under the NPP government, attributing the issues to the politicization of distribution.
Speaking at a Town Hall meeting in Takoradi, part of his “Building the Ghana Tour,” Mr. Mahama empathized with concerns from fisherfolk while promising to alleviate the challenges in the fisheries sector.
He reiterated plans to eliminate politicization in premix fuel distribution and guarantee direct access for fisherfolk.
Promising substantial changes he will make if elected, he said “We will ensure the politicization of the premix fuel is phased out completely and we make sure when the premix arrives it doesn’t pass through party members but rather get to the fisherfolks directly”.
Additionally, Mr. Mahama pledged free healthcare for persons with disabilities, ensuring their access to NHIS-covered hospital services without the need to pay premiums.
Furthermore, he underscored the importance of enhancing railway and port investments in Sekondi-Takoradi to generate employment opportunities for the youth.
