The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists has called an indefinite strike at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which will begin on Thursday, May 27th, 2021, over the appointment of two haematologists to the hospital’s Laboratory Service Department.
The Medical Laboratory Scientists went on strike over the move exactly a week ago.
In a Citi News interview, the Association threatened to turn the one-week sit-down strike into a full-fledged strike if management refused to budge on their demands.
After Wednesday’s meeting, Ernest Badu Boateng, the Chairman of the KATH chapter of the Association, who announced the indefinite strike, told Citi News that members from other regions have expressed their willingness to join the strike.

“The general assembly of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, Komfo Anokye Hospital Chapter, has decided that, since management and the Ministry have failed to act on our request to remove the two doctors from the lab, we will not be coming to work at all starting tomorrow [Thursday].” Until further notice, there will be a total strike and a suspension of services.”
The Ministry of Health’s and KATH’s calls for the scientists to resume their work so that dialogue can begin have yielded no results.
To meet the needs of patients who require such services, hospital officials have turned to other private laboratories.
