K.T. Hammond, the former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, has initiated legal proceedings against broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, for alleged defamatory remarks made during a televised broadcast on Onua TV.
The lawsuit, filed in the wake of the December 7, 2024, elections, revolves around claims that Captain Smart and his co-host accused Mr. Hammond of making tribal comments.
According to the defendants, Mr. Hammond questioned how an individual of a different tribal descent could win the Adansi Asokwa parliamentary seat in the Ashanti Region—a claim the former legislator vehemently denies.
Election Context and Allegations
The controversy emerged shortly after Mr. Hammond, who contested under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost his seat to Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
On a December 9, 2024, broadcast, Captain Smart and his co-host attributed the alleged tribal remarks to Mr. Hammond, sparking widespread discussion.
Mr. Hammond has dismissed the accusations, stating that the claims portray him as a tribalist unwilling to accept electoral outcomes involving Ghanaians from diverse heritages.

He argues that the remarks made during the broadcast, coupled with their extensive dissemination online and offline, have damaged his reputation, exposed him to public ridicule, and caused significant emotional harm.
Legal Demands
In his lawsuit, Mr. Hammond seeks several remedies from the court:
- Damages: Compensation for the defamation, including special, aggravated, and exemplary damages for the wide circulation of the alleged remarks.
- Injunction: A court order restraining Captain Smart and his team from making further defamatory statements against him.
- Public Retraction and Apology: A directive for a retraction and apology to be aired and published with equal prominence on all Onua TV platforms, including television, radio, and social media channels such as Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter).
- Content Removal: The immediate removal of the defamatory content from all digital and third-party platforms.
- Legal Costs: Full reimbursement for expenses incurred during the litigation.
- Other Reliefs: Additional remedies the court may deem appropriate.
Impact and Public Reaction
The lawsuit underscores the growing scrutiny on public discourse in Ghana, particularly in the political and media spheres.
The case has drawn attention to the potential consequences of unverified statements in the media, especially during a politically charged period.
While the court is yet to deliberate on the case, the outcome could set a precedent for defamation cases involving media personalities and public figures in Ghana.
Further updates will follow as proceedings unfold.
