Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has revealed that the government may be unable to pay salaries for the next three months.
The Speaker attributes this to information he claims to have at his disposal.
The Speaker, who made the revelation on the floor of Parliament, on Thursday, 24th February, urged MPs to “show leadership in these difficult times.”
“This is not to discourage the committee from doing their work. If something is not done within the next three months, the government may not be able to pay salaries.”
“So we have to take leadership. We have to do a lot of things,” he said.
His concerns come amid labor agitations for better working conditions as well as rising living costs, even as the government struggles to pass the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy, which it has billed as a major solution to the country’s many financial problems.
