The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) is today meeting the Ministry of Transport to negotiate the increment in transport fares.
This comes at the back of a consultative meeting between the two parties to negotiate an increment in fares which ended inconclusively because of a disagreement between the Ministry and the GRTCC after the latter proposed a 26% increment in fares.
The meeting was rescheduled for Thursday, September 22 to allow the parties to reconsider their proposals, with the hope that they can reach a consensus.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), indicated that the reason for its increment in transport fares is due to the proposed increment in fuel prices at the pump and the cost of spare parts.
The spokesperson of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, is confident that they will arrive at an acceptable increment when they meet the Ministry again.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) last week debunked claims it will increase transport fares in the coming days after media reports indicated that transport fares will go up by 30%, effective September 30.
According to the General Secretary of the association, Godfred Abulbire, there will be no such increment but indicated that the association will engage various stakeholders within the sector to decide whether there will be an increment or not.
