Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe says the current administration is not being honest with Ghanaians on the ongoing nationwide power interruption.
The stalwart of the NPP feels the entire government machinery is not being truthful to Ghanaians on the true state of the country’s energy sector.
Speaking on Joynews monitored by ATLFMNEWS on Thursday, March 14, 2024, Dr. Tamakloe asserted that government’s claim on the current power outages not being ‘DUMSOR’ but a result of maintenance work by the power distribution company is completely untrue.
His comment follows the ongoing nationwide power interruption which has become a dominant public discussion.
Dr. Tamakloe mentioned that the long-standing issue has been tackled differently by successive governments in their bid to solve the situation.
“This so-called ‘Dumsor’ did not start today but as far as the time of Jerry John Rawlings, it started showing its ugly face. It got worse when Kuffour came to power when I was the ambassador of Serbia. Then came Atta Mills, who managed it somehow, and with John Mahama, I think he tackled the fundamentals of the real problems confronting this country. Then we took over, I mean the NPP with all the promises that we gave along, everybody expected us to carry on well,” he continued.
He therefore urged the government to take responsibility and be truthful to Ghanaians regarding the energy crisis.
“At least it is the duty of government to make sure that the citizenry is given the power to work with…” he emphasized.
Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe further touched on the issue of the National Cathedral describing it as a waste of money by President Akufo Addo considering the current economic crisis the country finds itself in.
He adds that the huge sums of about 400 million Ghana Cedis spent on the project could have been channelled into building hospitals to benefit Ghanaians.
“Let us be frank and we fail to see our priority. It shows clearly that we do not know where we are heading. I mean this is a nation in debt, a nation where the ordinary person’s take-home salary is less than a dollar and you talk about the national cathedral?” he questioned.
Additionally, he questioned the success of the Free Senior High School policy introduced by the current government.
According to him, the report of several challenges such as scarcity of food supply, accommodation issues, and absence of textbooks show that the policy has failed.
“When I was in secondary school, I was fed three times a day, now our time has been different from what we see today. It is in our constitution that it should be done progressively and if we adopt that method, I think we shall get somewhere. So, you don’t come out with promises you cannot really implement and that is the problem with it. Dams promise, factory promise, where are they now?”
