With an unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, the executive director of Alliance for Science, Dr. Sheila Ochugboju has urged Ghanaians to take action to address the profound impact of climate change.
She emphasizes that recognizing the far-reaching consequences of this global challenge is a collective effort to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate.
Dr. Ochugboju highlighted the urgency of the situation that climate change affects every aspect of lives, from food security and public health to economic stability and social justice.
She said annually, floods affect nearly 45,000 people in Ghana with the affected losing “And apart from floods, you have droughts, you have pests. So, you have all of these challenges, and you have a vulnerable coastline that is being eroded. So, encroachment on the sea onto land is very significant. So, climate change is real”
To her, no one can ignore the impact of climate change and though Ghanaians are adapting to it, they are not adapting to it well and fast enough.
To this end, she explained that the Alliance for Science is food security.
“Soil may be flooded, drought, disaster-prone, but we have agricultural technologies that allow us to mitigate against that. So, we have now new varieties that are pest-resistant, strain, and also drought resistant. And those are from agricultural biotechnology, from researchers right here in Africa, right here in Ghana, West Africa Center for Crop Improvement has, over the last 20 years, brought about such innovations”
She, therefore, said government should supply good seeds to farmers so that they have at least one less thing to worry about.
Dr. Ochugboju also stated that humans have the ingenuity to feed themselves but economies need to be innovative in growing their food.
This, she believes will ensure a continuous food supply to all despite the impacts of climate change the country continually faces.
