Ghana has confirmed its first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness that has recently seen a surge in China and other countries.
The announcement was made by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on the floor of Parliament yesterday, where he assured the nation that the government is actively monitoring the situation to prevent a potential outbreak.
HMPV, a virus known to cause mild to severe respiratory infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, was detected in an elderly patient through routine surveillance initiated in January 2025.
Out of 90 samples tested, only one positive case was recorded.
“Mr. Speaker, we have identified a single case of human metapneumovirus, HMPV, in the country. This is a respiratory virus that can cause a range of illnesses, from mild cold-like symptoms to severe pneumonia,” Minister Akandoh stated.
Despite concerns over a possible outbreak, the Health Minister reassured Ghanaians that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
“I want to assure the House that the risk of HMPV in Ghana remains low. Our health systems are vigilant, and we are taking all necessary measures to prevent any spread,” he added.
This development comes at a time when Ghana is grappling with cholera and meningitis outbreaks in multiple regions.
The Health Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening disease surveillance and response systems to safeguard public health.
