As Ghana joins the rest of the world today to mark the international day of mathematics, a lecturer with the department of mathematics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Agnes Adom Konadu says mathematics is a constant part of our lives hence one cannot do anything without mathematics.
The International Day of Mathematics (IDM), proclaimed by UNESCO, is being held under the theme “Mathematics Unites” which reflects that the planet shares one mathematical language, which is the language of science.
This year, the main rationale of the celebration is to take away the fear people have about mathematics and to specifically encourage more women to study mathematics as there are numerous opportunities for them in society.
According to Dr. Adom Konadu, everything about mathematics is the same everywhere and also not a difficult subject as purported by many.
“Everything that we do is all about mathematics. We all do mathematics in one way or the other so mathematics unites all of us. Let us try as grown-ups to tell our younger people that mathematics is not as difficult as we always say” Dr. Konadu advocated.
On his part, a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Mathematics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Edward Stephen Moore believes that mathematics should be increasingly discussed in an interesting way to alleviate the fears students have on the subject.
To him, if basic school children are introduced to ideas that make mathematics exciting and interesting, they will be able to pursue further the subject and pursue more mathematics.
