Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim has urged Ghanaian Geographers to consider adopting a multidisciplinary approach in their bid to help the country achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Meanwhile, delivering a keynote address on the theme, “Ghana’s Journey Towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Perspective of Geographers,” at the grand opening of the Ghana Geographers Association 2023 annual conference, he urged the geographers to focus on their interests and expertise as they contribute their quota to the efforts Ghana is making to achieve the SDGs.
According to him, it will be best if Physical geographers allow SDGs 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 and 15 to inform their decisions.
He says human geographers can also make great impacts if they focus on the remaining eleven goals.
Meanwhile, making a plenary presentation on the topic, “How is health and wellbeing optimized? – A Reflection on SDG 3”, the Director of the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) at the University of Cape Coast, Prof David Teye Doku indicated that the field of geography cannot be underestimated in optimizing health.
To him, health is not just about what one takes into the body but also more about the environment one lives in and the socio-economic status of an individual.
The Ghana Geographers Association (GGA) 2023 three-day annual conference began on Thursday, August 31 at the School of Graduate Studies Auditorium with about 200 participants.
This year’s conference is serving as a platform for geographers from some Junior High Schools, Second Cycle and Tertiary Institutions as well as private institutions across the country to share knowledge and deliberate on issues centred on “Ghana’s Journey Towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Perspective of Geographers.”
The conference will also feature a workshop for geography teachers meant to build their capacity to teach the geography subject effectively.
President of the Association, Professor Kwabena Barima Antwi speaking at the grand opening of the conference explained it is his expectation that all participants will actively participate especially in the workshop on teaching geography and the field visits involving both right from Elmina and the centred peace of the African community to ensure a social conference.
He further indicated that after the conference, the association will issue a conference decision and policy brief and hand them over to the government for them to consider the recommendations made at the conference.
