The #FixTheCountry Movement is gearing up for a major street protest on May 1, 2025, demanding immediate government action to address illegal and irresponsible mining activities that are devastating Ghana’s forests and communities.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, lead convener, revealed the protest during an appearance on JoyFM’s Ghana Connect on Friday, April 4, 2025.
He described the demonstration, titled “May Day, May Day,” as a desperate cry for help over the country’s worsening environmental crisis.
“For months, we’ve seen the government act swiftly on other matters, but when it comes to illegal mining, there’s no clear roadmap,” Barker-Vormawor said. “We believe time has already been wasted. It’s time for urgent and serious action.”
Barker-Vormawor emphasized that the protest is a last resort, stemming from a growing frustration over the lack of progress on the issue.
“A protest is a tool for citizens who feel that their voices aren’t being heard, and in this case, we believe the government isn’t treating the environmental crisis with the urgency it deserves.”
The protest aims to push the government to take stronger measures to combat illegal mining, which has led to severe environmental degradation in forest reserves and mining communities.
Barker-Vormawor urged citizens to come together, regardless of political affiliation, to demand accountability and more effective policies.
“We want to remind the government that this is a serious issue, and citizens are demanding action. This is not about politics; it’s about saving our environment for future generations,” he added.
The #FixTheCountry Movement is calling for widespread participation in the May 1 protest, which will take place in key cities across the country, as part of its continued efforts to address pressing national issues.
