A five-day Ghana-Norway Summer School has opened at the University of Cape Coast that forms part of activities under the collaborative project dubbed Ghana-Norway Collaboration in Medical Physics and Radiography Education (NORPART-2016/10470).
The project, with the objective of establishing a partnership for education and research within the fields of Medical Physics, Radiation Protection and Radiography aims to cover student mobility at masters and PhD levels, internships at the hospital mobility of academic staff, annual summer school and guest lectureship.
Briefing ATL FM NEWS about the project, Professor Stephen Inkoom, the project coordinator for Ghana of the Ghana-Norway project said it is a collaboration project between the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, University of Ghana, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Troiham in Norway.
“And this summer school is five days of intensive scientific presentations in topics either in medical physics, medical physics in radiology, in nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. Then also we have nuclear medicine. And then the last aspect of medical physics is the radiotherapy. So, this summer school, we have topics in all these branches”, he said.

He notes that there will scientific presentations given by lecturers from Norway and Ghana.
He added that considering the importance of continuous professional development, the Summer School serves as a platform for the about 70 individuals taking part in the program todevelop new knowledge that will help enhance their practice.
Prof. Inkoom further indicated that for this year’s summer school, which is the sixth in the series, about 70 students, academics and scholars are participating.
He said, “so, we have students from the University of Cape Coast, we have practitioners from the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, we have practitioners from the University of Cape Coast Hospital, we have students from the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, university of Ghana, Atomic Campus. We have researchers from the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, we have radiographers, very seasoned radiographers, like the president of the Ghana Society for Radiographers, all participating.
He reiterated the importance of continuous professional development stating that, as practitioners and students, there is always the need to acquire new knowledge.
While expressing appreciation to the institutions that have made the programme a success, Prof Inkoom urged participants to leverage on the Summer School to gather more experiences through knowledge sharing and networking.
The five-day Ghana Norway Summer School been held on the theme Emergence of New Technologies in Diagnostic Medical Imaging commenced on Monday, October 16 and will be wrapped up on Friday, October 20, 2023.
It is being hosted by the Department of Physics at the University of Cape Coast.
