According to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the May 7 power outages in portions of the country were caused by a system disruption caused by malfunctioning equipment on the Takoradi Extension–Winneba line.
According to a statement, this forced the shutdown of all generating units in Aboadze, Bui, and Kpong.
With the exception of the Kpone Thermal Power Plant, plants in Tema were likewise forced to shut down.
“This caused forced outages within the coastal corridor of the National Grid which led to power supply interruptions in some parts of Greater Accra, Western/Central, Middle and Northern parts of the country,” the statement said.

“Restoration began immediately and supply was restored to all bulk supply points by 23:29 [on May 7],” it added.
GRIDCo said that the Akosombo and Kpone Thermal Power Plants were still operational and delivering power.
It also pledged to continue working toward the supply of a dependable electricity grid for Ghana’s socioeconomic development.
