Member of Parliament for Ningo Pampram and Deputy Ranking Member on the Communication Committee of Parliament, Samuel Nartey George, says the extension of the re-registration of SIM cards will buy some time for Ghanaians to register but will not fix the problem.
According to him, the only way to open up the registration process is to conform to what the law says.
He notes that his assertion is not based on the fact that the SIM re-registration is illegal but, the procedure and methodology laid out by the minister, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to the NCA is illegal
“The reason being that when you take the legislation in the country today, we have LI 2006 which is the law that regulates the registration of SIM cards in Ghana…so can anybody explain to me, why the minister for communication in carrying-out a legitimate re-registration process will decide to limit what the law has specified to only one card,” he questioned.
His comments monitored on TV3 by ATL FM NEWS comes when the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization says over 7.5 million Ghanaian citizens and residents are yet to obtain Ghana cards to enable them to register their SIM cards.
As such the ministry said it is extending the deadline from 31st March to 31st July 2022.
The Ministry in a press statement signed by the sector Minister, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said as of 17th March, fourteen million and ninety-one thousand, five hundred and forty-two (14,091,542) SIM Cards had been linked to the Ghana Card, ten million, three hundred and forty-eight thousand, five hundred and thirty-two (10, 348,532) Bio-Captures had taken place, and 99,445 extra SIMs had been registered.
To this end, Mr. Sam George stated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in parliament is going to challenge the legality of the procedure for the SIM registration.
