The people of Denkyira have celebrated the Adae Kesei with a call on nananom to help fight galamsey in the traditional area.
Denkyirahemaa Nana Ama Ayensua III, speaking at the ceremony emphasized the role of nananom in preventing illegal mining from occurring in their territory.
She maintained that even though nananom do not give mining permits to potential miners, they can resist to make sure illegal mining does not go on in their area.
Akwasi Dae Kesie is the last Adae celebrated by the Denkyiras when Odwira, the festival of Denkyira would not be celebrated for the year.
This year, Adae Kesie was celebrated on Sunday 26th November 2023, at Amponsem fie-Jukwa, the traditional capital of the Denkyiras.
The ceremony was attended by thousands of celebrants from far and near including Nana Yaw Akonor II, Paramount Chief of Vome Traditional Area in the Volta Region and his entourage who trace their ancestor’s roots to the great Denkyira.
She said it is sometimes embarrassing for her as the paramount queen when her attention is drawn to the destruction of lands in her traditional area. Therefore, she called on nananom to help fight illegal mining by not accepting them in their area.
Memenda Dapaa Walk
Prior to the Adae Kesie, a clean-up exercise followed by a Royal health walk dubbed Memeneda Dapaa walk with Denkyirahemaa, nananom, elderly as well as the youth through the principal streets of Jukwa was held on Saturday.
Addressing participants at the walk, Nana (Dr) Essiem Kwaakontan III, Fotosanfohene of Denkyira Traditional Area underscored the significance of the Memeneda Dapaa walk as keeping the body and soul together before the Adae.
It was also for the Denkyirahemaa and the chiefs to interact with the people and educate them on the need to keep fit and have a clean environment.
Nana (Dr) Essiem Kwaakontan III also used the opportunity to appeal to government to improve the road infrastructure in the Denkyira area especially Lower Denkyira where downpours of rain have left roads in a dilapidated state.
This pushes drivers willing to ply such roads to charge farmers exorbitant fares for the transport of their produce to market centres.
Fotosanfohene of Denkyira mentioned that apart from the main Cape Coast-Jukwa-Kakum road, there is not a single tarred road in Lower Denkyira.
He said due to the rains, most roads at Watreso, Krobo Nyameani that lead to the market centre become unmotorable and farm produce meant for the market gets destroyed in the process.
Nana (Dr) Essiem Kwaakontan III, therefore, appealed to government to as a matter of urgency, construct tarred roads for easy access to cart their produce to market centres to bring down the prices.
