A delegation from the Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Directorate (APQAD) at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has paid a courtesy call on the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA) of the University of Cape Coast.
The call, led by its Acting Director, Dr. Lord Mawuko-Yevugah was to discuss best practices in quality assurance in the two institutions.
The discussion between the two directorates was characterized by a presentation on the structure and mandate of UCC DAPQA, its activities as well as the role it plays in the university’s colleges, schools, faculties and departments.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS, the Acting Director for the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance at UCC, Professor Emmanuel Kofi Gyimah said the two directorates shared ideas and learned from each other on new trends in quality assurance with the aim of promoting quality education in the institutions.
He indicated that, the directorate looks forward to more of such engagements between the two directorates.
On his part, Dr. Lord Mawuko-Yevugah, the Acting Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Directorate at GIMPA was optimistic that implementation of the lessons learnt during their interactions with UCC will help his outfit function much better.
“We learnt a lot in terms of the way they organize their quality assurance directorate…they have this total quality management system which I think is something we will borrow to apply to our own case because we are a growing directorate in terms of numbers, in terms of outreach,” he said.
He further noted that although the directorate has been there for some time now, the focus has only been on quality academic work without looking at the other sectors of the institution.
“The only thing that has been missing is the inability to strengthen the two separate divisions, academic planning as a unique different unit and then the quality assurance working together within the same directorate as UCC has clearly done,” he indicated.
According to Dr. Mawuko-Yevugah they chose the University of Cape Coast to learn from them because of its reputation as a leader in tertiary education not only in Ghana but in the sub-region.
He said, “the things that we heard from the Director, and the presentation that was made confirmed our faith in UCC that they have something to offer”.
