Dr. Rita Holm Adzovie, the Director of the Guidance and Counseling Centre at the University of Cape Coast, has emphasized the importance of clear communication and mutual agreement in dating.
She emphasized that for a dating relationship to be taken seriously, there must be a proposal and acceptance, as defining the type of dating is crucial to avoid confusion and ensure both parties have aligned expectations.
Speaking on ATL FM’s ATLANTIC WAVE, Dr. Adzovie explained the two types of dating as casual and serious, revealing “Casual dating is just spending time with someone without serious commitments. It doesn’t involve any sexual elements and can involve multiple people.”
“On the other hand, serious dating is the first stage of marriage, where both individuals are testing compatibility. In serious dating, there is a proposal and an acceptance, which are critical steps,” she noted.
Dr. Adzovie urged individuals to avoid assumptions and be certain about the nature of their relationship, asking, “If the person hasn’t proposed, it’s good to ask, ‘What is the state of our relationship?'”
Additionally, Dr. Lydia Dankyi, a counselor and Senior Lecturer at the College of Distance Education at the University of Cape Coast, observed that the concept of dating has evolved over time.
“Nowadays, dating is seen as the first stage of a romantic relationship, often viewed as courtship without a formal proposal. It’s important to respect personal boundaries and avoid actions that could lead to regret, especially on a first date,” she advised.
Dr. Dankyi also highlighted the various reasons people date, such as companionship, fun, assessing compatibility for marriage, and even mutual benefits.
She pointed out that challenges often arise from miscommunication and differing expectations, urging clarity and honesty in all dating relationships.
“It’s essential to have clear intentions, especially when it comes to proposals. A hundred percent commitment is needed for serious dating, and without a clear proposal and acceptance, the relationship shouldn’t be taken too seriously,” she concluded.
