The Central Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Mrs. Akosua Agyeiwaa Owusu- Sarpong has revealed that the region’s holistic assessment report for 2021 showed an improvement in the overall aggregate score from 3.6 in 2020 to 4.1 in 2021.

This, she says translates to the high performance of the sector in delivering quality health service to its clients in the central region.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day health sector review performance meeting on Tuesday, March 9, 2022, she said the region performed exceptionally well at delivering health services to people, as evidenced in the integrated supported supervision conducted by the Ghana Health Service, the regional health service, and other development partners in 2021.

Themed “strengthening institutional System, achieving service performance and attaining excellence in maternal and child health service delivery in the midst of COVID- 19: the role of stakeholders”, the performance review will serve as a platform to review the performance of the health sector in the region, analyze performance gaps and map out measures to reach performance targets in line with the Ministry of Health’s Health Sector Medium Term Development Plan (HSMTDP)

According to Dr. Mrs.  Owusu- Sarpong, the theme is relevant because it reflects the collective approach and regional strategy towards enhancing service performance and achieving the indicated target towards the attainment of universal health coverage.

She said “If we build strong institutional systems in the service, it will translate into improved performance at all levels including the provision of quality maternal and child health service. The theme in a sense sums up our mandate as a health service and enjoins us to prioritize these issues as a precondition towards the attainment of the sustainable development goals and eventually the universal health coverage for our populace.”

She, therefore, asked management of health institutions to task institution support groups such as quality assurance team, clinical improvement team and health information teams to monitor the daily processes in the institutions.

On her part, Central Regional Minister, Hon. Justina Marigold Assan expressed her delight that the region’s health service has achieved significant progress in achieving the holistic evaluation indicator and assured of government’s readiness to assist the service in its efforts.

“I wish to assure you that government is committed to stepping up support, especially in human resource and infrastructural development including CHPS construction, polyclinic and hospitals for health delivery to the people”, she hinted.

She also urged stakeholders in the health sector in the region to contribute their quota to maintain the performance and successes chalked so far in the coming years.

Various representatives of the health partners such as the GHS council, national observers Team, CEOs of various hospitals among others who graced the occasion all congratulated the regional health service for the excellent work done so far.

Awards were also given to deserving district health directorates, hospitals, and polyclinics who have achieved excellence in the management of their respective health facilities.
