The Cape Coast Metropolitan Security Council says it is launching a new operation to clamp down the activities of sand winners and also stop open defecation in the city.
METSEC says this has become necessary due to the ineffectiveness of the Special Operation that was announced in October 2021 to stop sand winning along the beaches and prohibit open defecation.
Ahead of the new operation, a press conference has been held to send a strong warning to persons who engage in sand winning at the beach front.
“More often you hear people say we were not told, there was no public education and so this time we are calling this press briefing to send a certain signal to those who are engaging in sand winning and open defecation along the beaches of Cape Coast, that is from Ekon, down through Amanfrom to Bakaano and then Doakro area that very soon the METSEC will be embarking on a very serious operation,” the Chairman of the Metropolitan Security Council, Mr Ernest Arthur explains.
On the issue of regulating the activities of tricycle and pragyia operations within the Metropolis, the CCMA Chief Executive indicated that, the Security Council has not relented in its efforts.
He notes that, “Currently what we have in place is a permanent taskforce who are checking those riding the tricycle who are underage, those who are riding the tricycle after 6:30pm and those who are riding the tricycle using the highways. These are what we are checking so far and I must say it is still ongoing.”
The measures to keep the riders of the tricycle and pragyia in check were instituted at a meeting held by the METSEC in October last year which saw to the formation of a taskforce.
However, Mr. Ernest Arthur bemoans how the intensity of the measures has reduced and reveals that the Security Council has agreed to strengthen its efforts.
“Just recently, at another meeting, it’s been agreed by members of the Metro Security Council that we have another intensive operation and then get the taskforce to continue with their normal duties and make sure that some kind of sanity is brought into the system.”
