The Ghana Water Company Limited has hinted at plans to publish a water rationing table for the people of the Cape Coast and its environs in the coming days.
This according to the company is due to the onset of the dry season and low production of portable water.
Some areas in the central region have suffered a shortage of water for weeks due to inadequate supply from the Ghana water company limited.
The communications manager for GWCL in Western and Central Regions, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie explained to ATLFM news that the GWCL is facing challenges in the abstraction of adequate water for its treatment plants in the region.
He explained saying “the Ghana Water Company in the central region is currently facing some challenges in the abstracting of adequate quantities of raw water for treatment at our treatment plant at Sekyere Hemang and Baifikrom. Due to the lack of freshwater inflows into the Prah River and the IDA Dam at Sekyere Hemang and Baifikrom respectively, the water levels at the two intake points have gone very low making it difficult to abstract enough raw water for treatment. The situation has, therefore, resulted in low production of potable water leading to significant water supply shortfalls within the Cape Coast Metropolis and Saltpond town.”
A close source at the GWCL also told the Ghana News Agency in the central region that, activities of illegal miners in the upstream of Sekyere Hemang Headwork have resulted in the low volumes of water in the dam.
Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, therefore, said GWCL identifies with the hardship with which its cherished customers are currently going through in search of potable water and is critically studying the situation to find ways of ameliorating the difficulties.
To this end he said, due to the inadequate production and distribution, the company will publish a rationing table that will ensure equitable distribution of water to the people of cape coast and its environs.
He also called on all to save an adequate amount of water whenever they get access to water supply in their area.
