Security Analyst, Adib Saani, is calling for a swift response to the political crisis in Burkina Faso. He says the West African sub-region stands to suffer dire consequences if the situation is not contained.
His comment comes in the wake of the military takeover in Burkina Faso which has seen the arrest and detention of President Roch Kabore, the suspension of the country’s constitution, and the closure of its borders.
In an interview, Mr. Saani reiterated that the periodic political crises in Burkina Faso can be traced to President Kabore’s failure to solve the country’s varied challenges.
“Blaise Campaore ruled the country for 27 years and there was an uprising by the people, so Roch Kaboro came into office with a unique sense of energy and a lot of aspiration. People attached too much to his government and were expecting a lot but unfortunately, Burkina Faso still is one of the poorest countries in the world” he said.
He is urging ECOWAS to intervene swiftly as what is currently happening in Burkina Faso can have rippling effects on other countries in the sub-region.
To this end, he called on the ECOWAS to go beyond “being a firefighting statement issuing organization” and address the issues from the very fundamental so that it doesn’t get to the crescendo of the military having to take overpower.
On Monday, January 24th, 2022, a group of soldiers calling themselves the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration, led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba announced on state television their takeover of government. They cited the country’s deteriorating security situation as the reason for the coup and President Kaboré’s inability to unite the country and respond effectively to the country’s issues.
