This year marks a significant milestone for the Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) as it celebrates its 10th anniversary under the theme: “The Relevance of Film in Society.”
As Africa experiences rapid growth in its youth population and explores new pathways for economic development, the chosen theme highlights the powerful role of film in shaping society—by generating employment, attracting investment, and sparking public discourse.
Continuing its mission to spotlight and uplift African cinema, BSIFF has unveiled a 19-member global jury to adjudicate this year’s film entries. The panel will be chaired by Mr. Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, former Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana and current President of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association. A respected figure in the media space and a sitting member of Ghana’s Media Commission, Mr. Sunkwa-Mills brings invaluable expertise, leadership, and insight to the festival’s judging process.
The 2025 jury features an impressive blend of creatives and industry professionals from across Africa, North America, and Europe, reinforcing the festival’s international reach and its dedication to diverse perspectives in cinema.

Filmmakers submitting to BSIFF can expect their work to be evaluated by an esteemed and forward-thinking panel committed to celebrating cinematic excellence and integrity.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sunkwa-Mills praised the festival’s journey and acknowledged the vision of its founder, Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante.
“This ten-year journey is no small feat. All credit goes to the founder for her unwavering dedication and remarkable impact on Africa’s creative sector. Kudos as well to every team that has sustained the festival through the challenges of the past decade.”
He added:
“Our goal as a jury is to elevate BSIFF’s legacy, ensuring its influence continues to grow both within Africa and on the global stage. It’s vital that our awards authentically reflect the excellence and diversity of filmmaking—from Africa to the world.”
