Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has commissioned over 120 completed housing units for occupancy at Appiatse, a community between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality in the Western Region.
In January 2022, a catastrophic incident occurred when a vehicle transporting about 10 tonnes of mining explosives to the Chirano mines collided with a motorcycle. The collision caused a massive explosion that devastated the community which detonated and destroyed the community.
This necessitated the completion of 124 housing units and auxiliary facilities for the survivors.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia’s Show, the Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the 2024 Bawumia campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye revealed that the government has fulfilled the promise of constructing the housing units describing it as a model for Ghana moving forward.
He expressed gratitude to individuals and corporate entities for their contribution towards the completion of the housing unit.
“If you would recall, when the incident happened, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia visited the scene and promised the residents of Appiatse that President Akufo-Addo would roll out measures to rebuild the community. By the grace of God, individuals and corporate entities helped to make this a reality, he said.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye further noted the progress of the Bawumia campaign thus far while emphasizing the essence of TVET and its needed tools for effective implementation.
So far the vice president and presidential candidate for the NPP has toured the Eastern Region and is currently in the Western Region.
“so far, I can say so good. Nananom, Pastors, Imams and youth groups have had discussions with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and so far, he has promised to provide needed tools for the youth in artisanship, vocational and technical training with emphasis on the launch of the national apprenticeship programme two or three weeks ago.”
Meanwhile, Former DCE for Sekyere Afram Plains, Hon. Fuseini Donkor underscored the need for proper practice in small-scale mining without the pollution of water bodies.
Referencing the manifesto of the NDC presidential candidate, Mr. John Mahama, featuring the preservation of the forest reserve amid small-scale mining, Mr. Donkor expressed that mining is not the only means to making money in the country.
“If we want to engage in small-scale mining, what is the proper way of doing it without polluting the environment, how do we rebrand the forest? With John Mahama’s manifesto as a reference, you’ll get to see how the NDC intends to replenish all the lost forest reserves. What we are saying is that, if you destroy the environment, no matter how rich you are you will not survive”, he said.
His comments come at the back of the explosion that destroyed the Appiatse community in 2022 highlighting the need for a proper way of mining in the country to prevent future catastrophic events.
