In spite of the disturbances that characterized the Arise Ghana Tuesday demonstration, the leadership of the group says they have not been served any notice to halt the second day of their two-day street march.
A disagreement over the proposed route for the demonstration on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, resulted in a clash between protestors and the Ghana Police Service.
The group had earlier indicated their route for Tuesday’s demonstration to be from circle to Nima through to Ako Adjei and to the Jubliee House however, they were met with resistance from the police during the exercise.
The police in a bid to disperse the angry crowd over the disagreement, fired rubber bullets, and water cannons, and the crowd retaliated by pelting stones at the police.
It is alleged that 12 police officers and scores of protesters were injured with some police vehicles also damaged in the process.
The police in a statement indicated that 29 of the demonstrators have so far been arrested for their participation in the violent attacks.
The police also said they are looking forward to arresting the organizers of the protest and charging them in court for the attacks and damage to public property.
In spite of this development, the leadership in a media briefing Tuesday evening emphasized that they will continue with the demonstration today Wednesday, June 29, 2022.
Addressing the press after the day one on 28th June, leading member of the group, Sammy Gyamfi said “fortunately, the Police has not opposed the second day of the demonstration, they’ve not gone to court relative to the second date of the demonstration, they’ve not sent any signal that they are unhappy with the route, and we don’t expect them to do so,”
“We have not been served with any orders prohibiting us from demonstrating tomorrow and therefore I would use this medium to invite all supporters of Arise Ghana who attended the demonstration not to relent, give up or give-in but to Arise and meet us at El Wak”.
According to him the demonstration would start at 12pm from the El Wak Stadium in Accra and end at Parliament House.
