Apple has dismissed Elon Musk’s claims that its App Store is biased against AI apps competing with OpenAI.
In a statement reported by the BBC, Apple said, “We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria.”
This response follows Musk’s threat to sue Apple via xAI, alleging that the iPhone manufacturer is “behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store.”
Apple and OpenAI formed a partnership last year to integrate OpenAI’s models, including ChatGPT, into Apple products like Siri and iOS. However, there is no evidence to support Musk’s assertion that the App Store favors OpenAI; in fact, AI apps such as Perplexity and DeepSeek have reached the top of the App Store charts over the past year.

In the past, Apple might have overlooked such claims of chart manipulation. However, the company is currently facing increased regulatory scrutiny and new global laws aimed at curbing its influence in the app distribution market. Additionally, a U.S. district judge recently criticized Apple for not implementing required policy changes in its ongoing case with Epic Games.
