Minister for Trade and Industries, Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has called for a concerted effort by all stakeholders in the education sector and Ghanaians to contribute their quota to help change the fortunes of Ghana’s education.
According to him, the framework of the country’s educational system does not reflect its development priorities leading to the continuous rise in the number of unemployed graduates in the country.
Speaking at the 112th Speech, Prize-Giving, and Founder’s Day Celebrations of Adisadel College in Cape Coast, he stated that there is a need to take pragmatic steps to properly structure the education system to curb the high rising unemployment rate.
He said data available shows that yearly, over 300,000 students graduate from the country’s various tertiary institutions and enter into the labour market however, the public and civil services cannot employ more than 700,00 people.
This, he said, poses a major security challenge in Ghana largely due to the nature of its educational system.
“While several factors may account for this very unfortunate situation, the major part of this problem has to do with the mismatch between the nature and structure of our educational system…we need an urgent change in direction if we are to be counted among the developed nations in this world,” he emphasized.
To him, the country needs to as a matter of urgency adopt learning approaches that will enable the youth population to acquire the knowledge needed in the industry, ICT, engineering, and science to help the youth to become more employable.
On his part, Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum highlighted that one of the ways of achieving transformation in the country is to primarily focus on improving the quality of Ghana’s education to meet international standards.
He, therefore, advised students to channel all their efforts in studying hard and to be devoted to their books so that they can succeed in their quest to become great individuals not only in Ghana but internationally
The 112th Speech, Prize-Giving, and Founder’s Day Celebration was held on the theme “Reshaping Secondary Education to Equip and Produce the Requisite Entrepreneurs in This 21st Century: The Roe of Stakeholders and The State”.
