President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has unveiled a comprehensive four-point plan aimed at accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The four-point agenda includes Unlocking financing for accelerated SDG implementation; Prioritizing human capital development in Africa; Driving innovation in critical economic sectors; and Building resilient infrastructure to withstand global shocks.
At the opening of the 2024 SDG’s Action Summit in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the urgent need for bold and decisive actions to meet the SDGs.
He called for concerted efforts to achieve transformative change and build a sustainable, prosperous Africa that leaves no one behind.
The two-day summit, themed “From Mid-point to Success: Recommitting, Scaling Up, and Accelerating Action on the SDGs,” focuses on urgent institutional, governance, and policy reforms.
It also aims to reevaluate investment avenues to accelerate SDG implementation and highlight the private sector’s critical role.
Representatives from African governments, business leaders, policy institutions, and other stakeholders are attending the summit.
The expected outcome is a practical, solution-focused document to reinforce Africa’s resolve to progress towards the SDGs.
Regarding funding, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Africa’s commitment to the SDGs, acknowledging the persistent financing shortfall.
He cited the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa’s estimate that Africa needs an additional $1.3 trillion annually to meet the SDGs by 2030.
He also indicated that the current generation owes it to future generations to meet the SDG target.
“The consequences of the current situation in this trajectory are dire. If we fail to act decisively now, future generations will inherit a world beset by environmental degradation, economic instability, and social fragmentation. Our children and grandchildren will face harsher climates, scarcer resources, and greater conflicts unless we change course.”
The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Her Excellency Amina Mohamed asserted the necessity for reinforced commitment as we approach the latter half of the 2030 Agenda.
According to her, achieving the SDGs at the national level mandates the deployment of effective strategies, substantial financial mobilization, and the cultivation of strong partnerships.
