The School of Business at the University of Cape Coast has held its 2023 Dean’s Awards Ceremony stressing the need for student’s not to strive for only academic excellence but skills that will propel them to success in the real world.
The Dean’s Awards was instituted to recognize and award outstanding students who have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.6 and above at the end of each academic year.
In all 279 students were awarded.
The ceremony also aims at inspiring and challenging other students to work hard to improve their academic performance.
This year’s edition of the Awards was on the Theme “Academic Excellence and Skills Demand.”
Sharing his thoughts on the theme as the Guest speaker, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, Dr. Kwamena Minta Nyarku indicated that although academic excellence is vital, it is not the only requirement students need to excel in this current world characterized by technological advancement.
To him, it is the acquisition of the primary skill sets that actually equips students for success in the real world.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the School, Professor John Garchie Gatsi noted the effort the school is making to ensure that both students and faculty are equipped with digital literacy skills so they can meet the demands of the current job market.
He said the management and faculty are conscious about the training they give to students because the demand set for graduates at the school of business has changed significantly.
He revealed saying “Now it is expected that our students have digital literacy skills, data literacy, technical skills, interpersonal communicative skills, critical thinking, adaptability and flexibility, cultural sustainability and diversity consciousness while not forgetting teamwork and collaboration.”
“We have signed an MoU with the software providers who have given us student licenses for three software to be installed on students’ laptops, laptops of lecturers, office machines, and library machines to aid learning of the software to make them fit for purpose. We have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with… Technology Limited, a private technology company specializing in artificial intelligence solutions and software development to train ten Faculty members in the use of web-based software” he continued.
Prof. Gatsi further said access link will be provided to our students to become skillful in the software which is required to provide solutions to many businesses in Ghana.
He, therefore, appealed to all students to take advantage of the opportunity provided to be literate in the software.
