Spain Dominates but Faces Early Frustration
Spain came into this quarter-final as clear favourites after winning all three group matches and scoring 14 goals. Within eight minutes, they earned a penalty when Mariona Caldentey was fouled by Nadine Riesen. However, Caldentey’s effort went wide, allowing Switzerland to breathe a sigh of relief. Spain dominated the first half with 75% possession but couldn’t find a breakthrough, with the hosts defending bravely and frustrating the Spanish attack.
Breakthrough After the Hour Mark
The second half began much like the first, with Spain pressing and Switzerland defending in numbers. The deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute when substitute Athenea del Castillo, who had just been brought on, finished calmly after a pass from Aitana Bonmati. This goal ended Switzerland’s resistance and shifted the momentum firmly in Spain’s favour.
A Quick Second Goal Secures the Win
Just five minutes later, Claudia Pina doubled Spain’s lead with a stunning 20-yard strike into the top corner, leaving Swiss goalkeeper Livia Peng with no chance. This goal ensured that Spain could control the game and safely manage their lead, with Switzerland unable to recover from the quick double blow.
Missed Penalties and a Late Red Card
Spain had the chance to add a third goal late in the game when Del Castillo was fouled by Iman Beney, earning a second penalty for the team. This time, Alexia Putellas stepped up, but her penalty was saved by Livia Peng, marking Spain’s second missed penalty of the match. Switzerland’s frustration grew, and in stoppage time, Noelle Maritz was shown a red card for a late challenge on Salma Paralluelo, reducing Switzerland to ten players for the final moments.
Spain Sets Sights on the Final
With this victory, Spain advances to the semi-finals, where they will face either France or Germany in their quest for the Women’s Euro 2025 title. Despite Switzerland’s determined effort and Spain’s missed chances, the world champions showed their quality and depth, taking another confident step towards European glory.
