This year’s marking of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers may be in jeopardy due to unpaid monies amounting to GHC 33 million owed the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nussu Kortoe in a remark to the media concerning the impending BECE marking coordination across the country, believes that the financial crisis might prevent the publishing of exam results and have an effect on WAEC’s operations.
“I believe the process of marking the 2023 WASSCE and BECE scripts could be significantly hampered”, he said.
Mr. Kortoe noted that the government’s failure to timely provide money to WAEC during the last three years has reached a crucial point.
Prior to this, WAEC’s head of Public Affairs John Kapi issued a warning in August, stating that any delay in the disbursement of funds earmarked for BECE could adversely affect the marking process.
He claimed that although the printing and conducting of the exams have been completed, the marking and processing may not be finished since they want money to support their business.
He added that only 15% of the entire amount needed for the 2023 WASSCE had been released by the government.
He, therefore, requested the rapid release of the remaining 75% of the funds in order to ensure the efficient flow of script processing and marking.
