President Akufo-Addo says the recently commissioned Elmina fishing harbour is a symbol of hope, progress and prosperity for the people of Elmina in the Central Region.
According to the president, the harbour will promote catch in the most hygienic environment, improve the safety and welfare of the people of Elmina and provide job opportunities for Elmina and its environs.
“The port is equipped with various amenities to enhance the quality of the catch and promote economic development onshore facilities that have been provided. In addition to the marine works include an administrative building, a new fish market, a shed for net mending, auction hall and workshop, and a blue some facility. Access road and parking and paving at the castle area would also create additional job opportunities, both direct and indirect, when operations.” he said.
President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo on Friday May 26, 2023 commissioned the Elmina Fishing harbour which will help boost the fishing industry and contribute to the growth of the economy.
The thirty months project which started in August 1st 2020 and completed at the end of January 2023 is aimed at providing adequate facilities berthing space and creating a deep marine access to ensure the safe reception of fishing craft.
The project comprised of the construction of breakwaters, civil buildings, quay walls together with the dredging and reclamation works of the new port basin.
Speaking at the commissioning President Akufo-Addo indicated that the fishing industry plays significant role in the country’s economy as about 60% of the nation’s produce is derived from the fishing sector while contributing about 11% of the agriculture GDP.
he therefore called for collaborative efforts of all to end illegal fishing practices and its related activities which he believes hinders the growth of the fishing industry and ensure its safe utilization.
“These illegal practices have resulted in, and may continue to lead to a significant loss of potential income for coastal community. We must work together to safeguard our fish stock, promote sustainable practices, and address the socioeconomic needs of the fishing community.”
The minister for fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hawa Koomson described the Elmina fishing Harbour as another milestone in the development of the fishery sector in Ghana.
To her, the commissioning of the Elmina fishing port has come as an opportune time to address the current challenges associated with safe landing for fishermen after fishing expedition.
She further said the fishery sector has the potential to contribute significantly to the socioeconomic development of Ghana if managed sustainably.
