The African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) in collaboration with the Department of Renewable Engineering, Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) has held a day’s seminar for students on active citizenship in resource governance.
The seminar organized on the theme: Strengthening Accountability for Good Resource Governance through Active Citizenship had students from CCTU and some Senior High Schools within the Cape Coast Metropolis and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District attending.
Policy Lead for Petroleum and Conventional Energy at ACEP, Kodzo Yaotse, speaking to ATLFMNEWS at the training mentioned that citizenry participation in the use of petroleum funds to strengthen accountability remains crucial.
He believes that students who are the future leaders are ignorant of what is going on in the country and as oil and gas is a major component of Ghana’s source of revenue, it is important the students are sensitized in that regard.
“It is an open-source of information and we are sensitizing them to know what is involved and how to ‘Police’ the way these revenues are spent, resources are utilized and to question what the revenues are used for,” he said.
Dean of the School of Engineering, CCTU, Prof Lawrence Atepor told ATLFMNEWS that the training comes to expose the students to how funds from the petroleum sector are managed and how they can become active participators in ensuring accountability.
The result, he explains, will put the leadership of government on their feet due to citizens becoming more aware of their actions with regards to petroleum funds.
He, therefore, said it is critical for all citizens to also become active and engaged with the process of resource governance in the country.
