Following the president’s state-of-the-nation address and the spontaneous cheers that greeted his presentation, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin listed Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah‘s name twice.
Members on both sides erupted in jeers and cheers depending on where they stood when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recognized him in his speech.
It is uncertain what the motives are, but it is clear that they have something to do with the Supreme Court’s recent decision on John Dramani Mahama’s election petition.
On Thursday, March 4, the Court, presided over by Justice Anin Yeboah, dismissed the petition.
President Akufo-Addo began his speech by expressing his delight at the reaffirmation of the results of the December 7 presidential elections, describing the decision as “well-reasoned” and “excellent.”
Speaker Bagbin had to present the dignitaries in the makeshift chamber shortly after the president’s speech.
When Justice Anin Yeboah was presented, the Majority applauded him, while the Minority booed him for reasons that they knew about.
Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) went even further, singing a “thanksgiving” song for him.
The unanimous decision on the election petition was handed down on Thursday.
